MAMA 2016
What did Wizkid have over Davido at this year’s awards?
They both worked on the international scene. But one had results to show for his effort. The other was delayed, and came too late.
2015 was the year of Davido at the MTV Africa Music Awards. The star has had an impressive run on the continent, and led from the front with the two most prized trophies of the night – Best Male Act and Artiste of the Year.
This year, he didn’t even get a nomination. Instead, his arch-rival, Wizkid reigned supreme. The Starboy was the toast of the night, racking an impressive three awards, and gifting fans across the globe with a super performance that oozed skill, happiness and showmanship.
On that night, Davido was far away from the center of the action – Johannesburg. He was in Lagos, preparing for a local concert where he was a headline act, alongside Phyno and Tiwa Savage. Meanwhile, the rest of the continental music biggest names were faraway, receiving rewards for a year full of achievements.
For Davido, his year was filled with accomplishments, but not of the kind deserving of awards. This was a year where he achieved a personal milestone. 2016 has seen the man ink a deal with Sony, collaborated with Young Thug, Future, Usher, Popcaan and Trey Songz.
The only problem was all of these new music was not released. They were potential hit records which stayed on his hard drives. When he finally did release his EP, “Son of Mercy”, it was too late for 2016. That ship had sailed.
“Why are people saying it’s taken forever, infact, shey na only me never drop? Abeg, make them free me,” Davido told Pulse.
“I was cool, I was travelling, I doing things, I was recording, I was living life, I was in America. It kind of was very fast for me, because I was moving so much, I was just setting up plays. I was setting up plays for the future.” He futher said.
He might have his cards lined up in the future, but the present is all that matters at the moment. The 2016 MAMA was called through, and he failed to grab a nomination. Instead, all of the spotlight was shone on Wizkid.
When Davido, was in his element in 2015, Wizkid resided in his shadow, and concocted new ways to push past the continent and break his brand and music into wider markets. He rode around the continent, recording with just about everyone who mattered. Chris Brown, Rihanna and Drake were some of the biggest names. He also did collaborate with South Africa’s DJ Maphorisa on ‘Soweto baby’ , a song which fetched him the trophy for the Best Collaboration. He was also a star on Tinie Tempah’s ‘Mamacita’, and released ‘Shabba’, which featured Chris Brown, Trey Songz and
French Montana.
Wizkid’s dominance on the night is a result of this work. His single with Drake,
‘One Dance’ is a shoo-in for the 2016 Grammy award nominations, after gifting Drake his first career number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and also becoming the most streamed song of 2016. It is on the strength of this foray into the international market, and the success of the result.
What Wizkid has over Davido this year was results. They both worked on the international scene. But one had results to show for his effort. The other was delayed, and came too late.
