Serious Protest In Ibadan-A Quest For Break up

KingSNet

Nigeria Politics

Two leading Yoruba socio-cultural groups are currently at loggerheads over the alleged secession agenda being championed by one of the groups for the South West of Nigeria to break away from Nigeria and become an independent nation.

The two groups are Yoruba World Congress (YWC), which is an umbrella body over more than 150 pan-Yoruba self-determination organisations, under the leadership of its President-General, Prof Banji Akintoye, as well as the Yoruba Appraisal Forum (YAF), under the leadership of Adeshina Animashaun.

The YWC addressed a press conference at its headquarters, Bodija, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Tuesday and re-established a vote of absolute confidence in the leadership of Akintoye. Also, the YAF, staged a peaceful protest march to the Oyo State Governor’s Office, Agodi, Ibadan on the same tuesday against alleged  secession agenda of YWC.

The YAF also presented a protest letter to the Governor Seyi Makinde, through his Executive Assistant on Security, Mr. Sunday Odukoya, who said: “We have received your letter. We shall deliver your message to the governor. Now that you have expressed your reservations, we assure you that we shall address the matter.”

The protesters carried placards with inscriptions, inluding: ‘What we need is development, not secession.’ Together we stand, divided we fall.’ ‘Together we stand and love one another.’ ‘Believe in one Nigeria.’ ‘In one Nigeria we stand.’

‘We are for unity, don’t beat the drum of war.’ But addressing journalists on behalf of YWC, Dr. Tunde Hamzat, dismissed the news making the round that Akintoye was no longer the leader of the Yoruba nation, saying: “The Yoruba World Congress is one and indivisible under the leadership of Emeritus Prof Banji Akintoye. There is no crisis within the YWC. We are not in contention with anyone or group.

This is a family issue which is being resolved within the clan.“We remain unequivocally committed to the ideals of the Yoruba World Congress (YWC) as eloquently expressed by Prof. Banji Akintoye, which are to liberate the Yoruba race from the oppression and persecution which Nigeria represents, to establish a better, more promising future for our teeming youths and to ensure the peaceful achievement of the self-determination goals of the Yoruba nation.

This is a gathering of all the groups which elected Prof. Banji Akintoye as Yoruba leader a year ago. They are the various groups which came together to form the Yoruba World Congress. These groups are gathered here in Ibadan, one year after that momentous event, to re-establish a vote of absolute confidence in the leadership of Prof. Banji Akintoye.”

Hamzat, who said the brains behind YAF are four members of YWC that were suspended based on certain issues, also noted that Akintoye emerged leader of Yoruba nation on August 22, 2019, and within one year, more than 100 Yoruba, both in Nigeria and in the diaspora, have been admitted into the YWC, saying “our admission into the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation (UNPO) within a year of our existence, is novel and commendable.

The Oodua Nation project is on course. We appreciate the efforts of Prof. Banji Akintoye and other leaders in this respect. The protection of lives and properties of the Yoruba and other ethnic nationalities domiciled in the Southt West geo political zone is of paramount importance to YWC leadership.

“We commend the courage exhibited by our governors in the establishment of Amotekun even in the midst of hostility and intimidation by the powers that be. The Water Bill at the National Assembly represents a background manoeuvre to bring back RUGA and further appropriate more of the resources of Yorubaland. It therefore stands totally rejected by the YWC.

In equal effect, the CAMA bill cannot stand because it puts the control of one religious group under another. It represents the ruthless deployment of power by the Muslim North to further continue the Islamisation and Fulanisation of Nigeria.”

However, the protest letter, entitled: ‘Please, Save Yorubaland from Imminent Doom!’ signed by Adeshina Animashaun, addressed to Governor Makinde, read in part: “Your Excellency, a motley of crowd of discontents, zealots have lately increased the tempo of their unpatriotic activities masquerading as championing the cause of the Yoruba people of the South-West. Their activities, at best, qualify for nothing good.

Oba Of Benin Opened up At Last -03/09/2020

Nigeria Politics

Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare 11, yesterday, warned politicians against setting the state on fire over the forthcoming governorship election. The monarch, who gave the warning, while speaking during a peace meeting he initiated for critical stakeholders in the gubernatorial contest, expressed worry over the spate of violence across the state ahead of the September 19 poll.

“The warning is especially for the candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),” the monarch said, adding: “I have had sleepless nights over this. My mind is burning up over this violence and shootings all over the state, let the shooting stop and let there be peace and quiet in the state. Don’t kill yourselves over an office, don’t kill yourselves over votes.”

The meeting, which held at the Benin Palace, was attended by the governorship candidates of the PDP and APC, Governor Godwin Obaseki and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, respectively as well as two former governors of the state, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, among others. Describing the peace deal as historic and significant to the unity, corporate and peaceful co-existence as well as the rich traditional institution of Edo people, Oba Ewuare advised the contenders to note that they had only Edo to call their own state and must do everything to protect it from disintegration.

His words: “Edo politics have been in the news for quite sometimes now for all the wrong reasons, we have sleepless nights for quite sometimes now because these are all our people, these are people of the same stock, from the same body; there is nobody who is a stranger to each other. “I have been worried right from the time the conflict started between Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the former governor and the incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki. “I want you to take your mind back to 2015.

Before the final election results were announced, President Goodluck Jonathan picked up his telephone and called President Buhari. All the predictions and forecasts by the international community that Nigeria will break up were quenched just by that singular act.” To the Edo governorship contenders, Oba Ewuare charged: “Enough is enough! You must surprise everyone, so that when the election comes it will be peaceful. You are all from the same state and you want Edo State to be a laughing stock? “I want peace to reign; the political actors have been together. Today you are together, tomorrow you are no longer together; you are confusing everybody, the media and the people. Is it because of the office?” He advised the candidates, their leaders and members to embark on issue-based campaigns and not indulge in violence. He further said: “I didn’t expect either side to be castigating each other. Enough is enough! This is not do-ordie. I am very, very sad about what has been happening in Edo.

I think this is the worst scenario. So, do your best to calm down the temperature. “Both of you are arming thugs and I worry about what will happen with these weapons after the poll. We are doing our bit internally; traditional prayers are being offered so that there will be peace during the election. I want to appeal to politicians to control the youth.

I want the politicians to assure us that there will be peace. You do not kill yourselves over an office. “We are begging you politicians, particularly the two political gladiators. You must all do your bit to calm down the tension in the state,” he said. The monarch maintained that the traditional institution remains nonpartisan, and warned the palace chiefs against making any political statement. In their separate responses, Obaseki and Ize-Iyamu gave their assurances to the monarch and promised to ensure that their supporters will conduct themselves peacefully. Oshiomhole, who also spoke, said as a product of peaceful elections, he will not deviate from what will guarantee a peaceful election.

Saraki Breaks Silence On Victory Of Oyetola Over Adeleke.

President of the Senate and Chairman of the PDP Campaign Council on Osun State, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has reiterated that the recently-conducted supplementary election in Osun State was a charade and an embarrassment to Nigeria’s democracy.

His position was contained in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu.
Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) defeated Senator Ademola Adeleke of the PDP with 482 votes in the rerun poll conducted on Thursday.

Oyetola scored a total of 255,505 while Adeleke scored 255,023.

In his reaction to the final outcome of the governorship poll, Saraki said: “Yesterday, we witnessed another display of the subversion of the will of the Osun people during the re-run gubernatorial elections in the State. The election was characterised by widespread voter intimidation, violence and harassment. Accredited observers were denied access to polling units and duly registered voters were prevented from participating in the electoral process by thugs and compromised security agents..

“Like I said a few days ago, this needless re-run election was only designed as an avenue for the ruling party to perpetrate electoral fraud. The nature of these elections is an embarrassment to our democracy and casts an alarming pall on the institutions responsible for protecting the will of the Nigerian people as stated through their votes. That was why for more than ten hours the INEC could not collate and announce results in just seven polling units with just over 2000 votes.

“It is surprising that the election in which on Saturday, the two leading candidates were running neck to neck with the PDP candidate having an edge, four days later, as a result of manipulations and impossible conditions, the APC candidate is now being credited with all the votes and some paltry number of votes were being recorded for the PDP candidate.

“It is important for Nigerians and the international community to insist that the hands of the clock should not be turned back in terms of the achievements we recorded in the last general elections. We should not make a mockery of democracy by conducting elections in the manner that the Osun Polls were conducted. The Osun election is a clear indication of how the 2019 election will be conducted. It demonstrates that if we cannot conduct free, peaceful and fair elections in seven polling units spread across four local government areas of a state, then the conduct of the general elections in 774 local government areas across 36 states of the country is already endangered.

“I therefore call on the government, INEC, security agencies and development partners to ensure a radical change in the way and manner the next set of elections will be conducted. Osun 2018 Polls is a very low point in our electoral system.

“In the 2015 elections, Nigeria witnessed several gains in its electoral process. The process was transparent and people’s votes counted. These gains made it possible for the then opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) to win at the centre and in many states of the nation. That election highlighted a fine moment in Nigeria’s democracy.”

Osun rerun: Governor-elect, Oyetola reveals plans for state [Full acceptance speech].

Governor-elect of Osun State, Gboyega Oyetola, has thanked the people of the state for supporting him to victory in the just concluded governorship election.

Oyetola had on Thursday won the rerun election with a difference of 835 votes as he acquired a total of 1160 votes to Adeleke’s 325.

The poll closed with Oyetola winning a total 255,505 votes, 482 more votes than Adeleke’s 255,023. INEC’s Chief Returning Officer for the elections, Professor Joseph Afuwape, declared Oyetola the winner in Osogbo, the state capital on Thursday evening.

In his acceptance speech, Oyetola described the election as free and fair.

He also thanked President Muhammadu Buhari, APC National Leader, Asiwaju Tinubu and incumbent governor, Rauf Aregbesola, for creating the atmosphere for a democratic process.

His full statement below…

ACCEPTANCE SPEECH BY THE GOVERNOR-ELECT OF OSUN, GBOYEGA OYETOLA, AFTER BEING DECLARED WINNER OF THE GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION HELD ON SEPTEMBER 22, 2018

“Election into the Office of the Governor of the State of Osun was held on Saturday, September 22, 2018, in which I flew the flag of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a contest with 47 other candidates, representing their different political parties.

“From the field report and the tally of the ballots, there was enthusiastic turnout at the polls. The huge number of candidates who vied for the office was unprecedented. Though there were few glitches and challenges here and there, the exercise was satisfactory. We can say there has been substantial compliance with the provisions of the constitution and the Electoral Act.

“However, the election was declared inconclusive after the first ballot and a rerun was slated for Thursday, September 27, 2018, in seven polling units in Ife North, Ife South, Orolu and Osogbo Local Governments Areas of the State.

“This was disappointing. We had enough evidence and field reports, including signed result sheets, from our agents that confirmed that we won outrightly. However, as Democrats, we accepted the verdict in good faith and prepared for the rerun.

“In the end, I was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after securing the highest number of votes cast in the election.

“This election has been keenly contested, and a clear winner could not emerge until the tail end. Indeed, there was a dramatic twist in the end that kept us all on the edge and made Osun the focus of national and international attention. This is an indication of how democratic, free, fair and transparent the election was.

“However, I cannot but observe that the election took place under a much more relaxed and freer atmosphere, compared with the previous elections, particularly the 2014 governorship election, during which the state was put under siege by the then Federal Government.

“The democratic environment created by the APC under which this election was held is a clear indication of the great political development that has occurred in the past three years of our party’s administration, under President Muhammadu Buhari.

“This election is primarily a victory for democracy, rule of law and due process. It is a victory for the right of every citizen to participate in their own governance which democracy represents.

“The victory is an affirmation by the people of Osun in the APC government that has been on the saddle in the past eight years; and the acceptance of our ideology. It is a positive affirmation of our people-friendly policies and the way we have steered the ship of state, even under the most challenging circumstances.

“This is ultimately a victory for the people of Osun that have been given a voice and a hope of democratic and responsible leadership.

“I will like to commend and congratulate INEC for successfully conducting a free, fair and credible governorship election. I congratulate also our party, the APC, in Nigeria and South West, for its well-deserved victory at the polls, wrapping up the South West states and giving it the opportunity to use the progressive platform it offers for accelerated development of the region. I also congratulate Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, under whom I cut my political teeth and whose tenure was on trial during the election.

“I regard the mandate given to me by the good people of Osun as sacred and I am taking it seriously. Of course, I have been part of the new beginning that started eight years ago.

“Nevertheless, in continuing the glorious path on which I am now very familiar, it is a new beginning for me. I am committing myself the more to the good governance of Osun and the welfare of the people.I will run an inclusive and participatory government. I will consult with the party, workers, communities, traditional rulers, the civil society and the people of the state in their heterogeneity. I will engage the youth, tap into their ideas and enable them to unleash their creative energy in a positive way.

“I pledge to serve God and humanity and the people of Osun with my whole being, without prejudice to religion, ethnicity, race and ideology.

I will like to thank the Almighty God for His grace and divine enablement upon my life, and for fulfilling His promise to bless the land and people of Osun through me.

I will like to thank our great party, APC, for the overwhelming support given to me all through the campaign and for believing in me. The leadership and members of our party nationally and locally laboured hard for my victory. Our National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, backed me to the hilt. I thank him.

The national campaign committee headed by Governor Umar Ganduje and all the APC governors have my commendations and infinite gratitude.

“I will like to express my profound gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for his invaluable support and for leading a delegation of party and government officials to my campaign. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo did a yeoman’s job. He made several trips to Osun and supported the campaign with all available resources.

“My immense gratitude goes to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the leader of leaders, for his selflessness and absolute commitment to my election campaign and for giving his all.I cannot thank enough Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who gave me an opportunity to serve and who carried me on his shoulders when the going was tough.

“I must thank also the coalition that emerged for the rerun, including Senator Iyiola Omisore of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Osun Alliance of Collaborating Political Parties (ACPP) that wholeheartedly endorsed and supported my candidature.

I thank my lovely wife, Kafayat, and the children for believing in me and supporting me unreservedly. My wife, in particular, gave me the peace of mind and refreshing comfort at home.

I cannot end without thanking every member of my campaign team for their sacrifice, dedication and commitment. It is their victory as well.I thank all the people of Osun, especially those who believe in our cause and voted for me. It is your victory. I thank our royal fathers, workers, transporters, market women and men.

“The security agencies deserve commendation for keeping the peace and for their prompt response to every security challenge before, during and after the election.I salute members of the media too for their coverage.

Once again, I congratulate and thank all members of the APC in Osun for our hard-won victory, thank you all for your attention.”

PDP Accuses APC Of Day Light Robbery!

PDP Accuses APC, INEC Of Rigging Osun Supplementary Election.

The chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Uche Secondus, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), of rigging the Osun supplementary election.

In a statement by his spokesman, Ike Abonyi, Mr. Secondus said that the Osun election is a clear picture of what will happen during the 2019 general elections.
He linked the conduct of the Osun elections to that of the Ekiti governorship election, thereby accusing the APC of underserved victory.

” Democratic community all over the globe are watching and we would stop at nothing in highlighting them until the will of the people are allowed to prevail.

The PDP leader warned in particular security agencies to bear in mind that their allegiance and oath of office is to Nigeria state and her citizens not to any individual or ruling party.

He drew the attention of leaders of both INEC and security agencies to the fact that history has never been kind with anybody or group who wittingly or unwittingly thwart the will of the people.

Secondus said that PDP will not relent until it’s stolen mandates in Ekiti and Osun states are retrieved from the undeserving holders.

I Will Go To EFCC With Obasanjo - Fayose.

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, said former President Olusegun Obasanjo should be ready to clear his name of any allegation levelled against him.

The governor also asked the ex-President to stop raising alarm on plot to arrest him by the Federal Government.

He said: “Nigerians are being humiliated every day by President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime which he (Obasanjo) helped to enthrone.” “Some of us have gone through trials before and we are not afraid of trials even today.” The governor, who insisted that Obasanjo deserves whatever humiliation he was getting from President Buhari, said “the President can go ahead and arrest the ex-President if he desires but should remember that what goes around comes around.” “He won’t be President forever too.

After all, they have been intimidating and humiliating former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife,” Fayose said.

The governor referred to Page 96 of Obasanjo’s book, “My Watch,” where he wrote “I prefer him (Buhari) to jail me than Jonathan to return to destroy this nation,” noting that “since the ex-President himself said he preferred to be jailed by Buhari and worked for his enthronement, the President can hasten his arrest and imprisonment.

In a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Fayose said:

“When other Nigerians were at the receiving end of President Buhari’s dictatorship, Obasanjo was going in and out of the Presidential Villa. “Where was he when Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd) was arrested and detained since 2015 despite court orders for his release? When over 1,000 members of the Nigeria’s Islamic Movement were killed in Zaria and their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, arrested and dumped in detention since 2016 despite of court orders, what did Obasanjo do? “Where was Obasanjo when armed men of the DSS invaded the Ekiti State House Assembly and abducted one of its members? Did Obasanjo travel out of Nigeria when judges were being arrested in the night in a Gestapo manner?”

5,000 Members APC Dump Party For PDP.

About 5,000 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ika North East local government area of Delta State on Monday dumped the party for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the area.

Most of the decampees were mainly from Ekwuoma wards in Ika North East local government area, who claimed they were fed up with APC’s alleged lawlessness and lies laced with deceit.

At an open field in Ekwuoma community, the defectors were received by PDP chieftain in the area, Chief Gabriel Azukaegbo Njokede, who assured them that there would be no discrimination against them.

Osun Re-Run:Atiku Reject Election.

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has cast doubts over the conduct of the Osun governorship rerun election taking place on Thursday, September 27, 2018.

The governorship election that originally took place on Saturday, September 22, 2018, was declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday, September 23.

This was because the victory margin of 353 votes of the first-placed candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke (254,698 votes) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) over second-placed Gboyega Oyetola (254,345 votes) of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC) was less than the 3498 votes canceled in seven polling units.

With Osun residents casting their votes in the affected polling units on Thursday, Atiku has taken to social media to raise alarm over reports of irregularities taking place in the conduct of the election.

He tweeted, “Reports about voters & observers intimidation by security agents in Osun rerun election is unacceptable & must be stopped. The rerun is being widely monitored in Nigeria & beyond.

“I hope that @inecnigeria will redeem its pledge of being an impartial umpire.”

Atiku’s alarm comes just hours after PDP candidate, Senator Adeleke, described the rerun election as a coup against democracy.

“What is happening in Osun State now is not an election. What we have is a coup. That is what we are witnessing now.

“Our supporters are being harassed and are not allowed to vote at all. Let the whole world know that this is not democracy,” he told The Punch.

There have been several reliable reports that the polling units in Orolu LGA, considered to be the stronghold of the PDP, are scenes of widespread irregularities.

Thugs are reported to scare, harass and physically assault voters suspected to be PDP members while security operatives do little to control the situation.

Journalists and observers are also heavily monitored by security operatives while alleged thugs are reported to have taken over Orolu Ward 08 PU001 in Kajola village.

Some voters in Orolu protested after their permanent voter’s cards (PVC) were seized by gun-wielding thugs and they were sent away.

Three members of the Nigerian Bar Association observer group were also arrested by policemen at Ifon on their way to monitor the rerun election in some of the polling units in Orolu LGA. They were later released.

After INEC initially expressed frustration with reports of security operatives hindering observers and journalist, the commission later disclosed that all issues had been resolved.

Breaking:Gun Shots Rocks Polling Units As Adeleke Declared Osun Re-Run.

Adeleke Declared Osun Re-Run a coup.
Sounds of gunshot rocked unit 17, ward 5, Osogbo local government area of Osun state around 12pm on Thursday as voters and electoral observers scuttled to safety.

Suspected thugs had invaded the unit to disrupt the exercise but the security personnel on ground fired shots into the air to prevent them.

The exercise has been fraught with irregularities in at least four of the seven polling units where it is taking place.

Meanwhile, Ademola Adeleke, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the election, has described the rerun election as a coup.

“What is happening in Osun State now is not an election. What we have is a coup. That is what we are witnessing now,” he told PUNCH.

“Our supporters are being harassed and are not allowed to vote at all. Let the whole world know that this is not the democracy.”

Below are pictures showing an agent of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) bleeding from his mouth after he was allegedly beating in the presence of security agents at the Osun re-run election.

The pictures were shared by Deji Addeyanju who said,

”PDP agents are beaten almost to death at various polling units in the ongoing Supplementary election as security agents watch. The PDP agents end up running away from the voting area. Is this right?”

I Have Been Having Sleepless Nights Over Osun Result.

I’ve Been Having Sleepless Night Over Osun Result – Osoba.

Osoba said “Since the Osun election results came out, I have lost sleep. I am from Osogbo, I was born in Osogbo. We must learn some lessons from Osun election. A candidate who did not participate in the debates, at the Campaign rally he did not say anything, he did not tell the people what he wants to do.

A chieftain of the All Progressive Congress, APC and former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba has disclosed that he had a sleepless night while monitoring the result of the just inconclusive governorship election held on Saturday in Osun State which almost went in favour of the opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

He stated this while addressing some aspirants and members of the party at a meeting held in his house at Ibara GRA, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Osoba said the APC went to the election as a divided house, hence, they performed badly at the election.

Osoba who preached on unity in the party, said, the party should learn their lessons from the result of Osun governorship election.

He however, warned members against discrimination and forming of groups in the party and claiming to belong to the State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Osoba or Dapo Abiodun’s camps and so on.

He said “Since the Osun election results came out, I have lost sleep. I am from Osogbo, I was born in Osogbo. We must learn some lessons from Osun election. A candidate who did not participate in the debates, at the Campaign rally he did not say anything, he did not tell the people what he wants to do.

“It was said that he did not have certificate, yet he has votes. Primaries are just a step to win election. Let us be united towards the general election. I want all of you to be at rest over the coming electoral process it’s the duty of the Independent National Electoral Commission “.

He also stress that “security is a delicate issue in our system, it is not about carrying arms alone.”

At the meeting were: Prince (Dr) Dapo Abiodun, Prince Segun Adesegun, Otunba Jimi Lawal, Senator Gbenga Kaka, Nurudeen Akinpelu Aina and Akeem Ademolake.

Osun 2018: The Supplementary Election, Where is Omisore?

Photo Collage of #OsunDecides2018 APC and PDP candidates

As residents of seven polling units in Osun State get set to determine who will be the next governor, leaders of the two major parties have both claimed to have secured the crucial support of Iyiola Omisore.

Mr Omisore whose party, SDP, came third in the governorship election held on Saturday, stands no chance to be elected governor after Thursday’s supplementary poll.

Ademola Adeleke of the PDP scored the highest with 254,698 votes ahead of Gboyega Oyetola of the APC, who polled 254,345 votes. Mr Omisore, who hails from Ife Central local government, polled 128,049 votes to occupy the third place.

The supplementary election was declared on Sunday after the electoral commission, INEC, declared the governorship election inconclusive. INEC said the margin between the two leading parties, PDP and APC, is less than the number of cancelled votes (3,498) in the seven polling units.

PREMIUM TIMES earlier reported how Mr Omisore’s support was crucial for any of the APC or PDP to win the supplementary election.

To convince the Ife-born politician to support the PDP, the opposition party sent a delegation led by Senate President Bukola Saraki to meet with Mr Omisore. After the Monday meeting, Mr Saraki said he believed Mr Omisore would support his party.

“After meeting with him, I am more optimistic now that with his support, PDP will win. We are confident of a good outing. I am more confident now,” the senate president said.

“We have agreed to work together because our goals are the same. We all want good governance in Osun State. Over the next 24 hours, we will work out the details.

However, on Tuesday, an APC delegationled by the party chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, and governor-elect of Ekiti, Kayode Fayemi, met with Mr Omisore.

By Wednesday morning, a spokesperson for the Information ministry, Joseph Mutah, sent a message to journalists that Mr Omisore at the meeting agreed to work with the governing party.

“The SDP Candidate in last Saturday’s Governorship Election in Osun State, Chief Iyiola Omisore, has agreed to work with the APC in Thursday’s rerun.

“The deal was sealed after a meeting between Chief Omisore and an APC Team led by Chairman Adams Oshiomhole in Osogbo early Wednesday,” Mr Mutah said in the short message accompanied by photos from the meeting.

Mr Omisore had earlier on Monday after the meeting with the PDP leadership explained the conditions upon which he would support any of the two parties.

“I have given my programmes to both APC and PDP. My programme is like this; payment of salaries and pensions. Good governance is what is important to me,” Mr Omisore told journalists after the meeting.

“Anyone between the two that will do that will get my support. I am passionate about Osun and my interest is the welfare of the people of this state. I have told those sent to me. At the appropriate time, we will tell you where we are going,” he said.

When contacted on Thursday after the meeting with the APC delegation, Mr Omisore’s media aide told PREMIUM TIMES his principal was yet to declare support for any of the two parties.

“It is the same call for him to support APC for the re-run, but he has not decided on who to yet. He is interested in who will adopt SDP’s manifestos for good governance in Osun,” Seyi Gesinde said.

With about 24 hours to the Thursday election, all eyes will now be on Mr Omisore on who he would formally support for the election, and whether his supporters in those seven polling units will abide by his call.

• PDP for court today

• PDP agents ‘cloning PVCs’

• INEC is right, say SANs

HOUSE of Representatives Deputy Speaker Yussuff Lasun yesterday joined the battle to ensure victory for All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Gboyega Oyetola in tomorrow’s supplementary governorship election in Osun State.

The APC lost in Orolu Local Government Area, which is believed to be Lasun’s stronghold. He is known to be aggrieved with APC leaders.

The supplementary election will hold in three units in the local government due to cancellation over hijacking of materials by thugs.

There are 987 registered voters in the three units.

Also joining forces with the APC is Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate Senator Iyiola Omisore.

The election will determine the winner between Oyetola and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Ademola Adeleke.

Saturday’s election was declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which ordered the supplementary election in seven polling units in four local governments – Osogbo, Orolu, Ife North and Ife South.

There are 3, 498 registered voters in the polling units where the elections were cancelled due to various reasons, including hijacking of election materials, abscondment of presiding officer, disruption of election by hoodlums who were shooting sporadically, manual accreditation and over voting.

The supplementary election is a straight fight between Oyetola and Adeleke.

Adeleke has a marginal 353 votes advantage in the election in which Omisore finished third.

Omisore hosted an APC delegation of Ekiti State Governor-elect Dr Kayode Fayemi and Dr Olu Agunloye at his home in Ile-Ife.

On Monday, he received Senate President Bokola Saraki, who came to lobby him to support the PDP.

Omisore, who left the PDP for the SDP because the PDP ticket was skewed in favour of Adeleke, declined to give Saraki his commitment.

But after his meeting with the APC team, Omisore twitted under a photograph of himself with Fayemi and Agunloye: “With @OfficialAPCNg Ekiti state governor elect @kfayemi during his visit today. #goodgovernanceinosunstate #OsunDecides2018.”

In another tweet, Saraki Presidential Campaign Council spokesman Doyin Okupe said: “Omisore I’m told caved in to pressure from APC…”

It was learnt that Omisore, whose dad is the traditional ruler of Olode in Ife South where the election will hold in unit 07, 012 Adereti village with 812 registered voters, joined the APC for a campaign yesterday.

Also yesterday, the police confirmed the arrest of three people for allegedly buying Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and breach of the public peace.

The suspects, Alhaji Fatai Diekola, 61, Sikiru Lawal, 54 and Adekilekun Segun, 54, were arrested on Monday at Adewale Street, Alekuwodo area, Osogbo.

Spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command Folasade Odoro, a Superintendent (SP), said the suspects were arrested by the teams drafted to the state for election duties.

Odoro said: “The three suspects were arrested at Adewale Street, Alekuwodo area, Osogbo at one of the polling units where a re-run election is scheduled to take place on Thursday, September 27.

“They were said to be soliciting to buy additional PVCs from one Olawale Kazeem of 4B, Adewale Street, Alekuwodo area, Osogbo and Azeez Sulaiman of 3A, Akinlade Street, Alekuwodo. It was gathered that when the duo declined to sell their PVCs, they were allegedly attacked by the supporters of the suspects.

“However, timely intervention of the police operatives led to the arrest of the three suspects after they were attacked and wounded by the mob. “However, the wounded were taken to the Police Hospital for medical treatment and currently assisting the police in investigation into the crime and the recovery of the PVCs alleged to have been bought from other people in Osun State. The outcome of the investigation will definitely be made public.

“In the meantime, the Nigeria Police Force is assuring the good people of Osun State and other critical stakeholders of its renewed commitment and resolve to ensure adequate security for a free and fair re-run election as announced by INEC in Osun State.

“Members of the public are however advised to desist from any action that may elicit violence as any person arrested will be made to face the full wrath of the law.”

The brickbats continued yesterday between the APC and the PDP over the Osun State governorship election.

The governor-elect will emerge tomorrow after the supplementary election in seven units in four local governments.

The PDP plans to file a suit today on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s declaration of Saturday’s election as inconclusive.

But the APC Campaign Council urged voters in the areas where the supplementary election will hold to ignore the “ranting’’ of the PDP and turn out en masse to vote for the ruling party.”

The Chairman of the Council’s Media Committee, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the PDP’s threat to challenge in court  INEC’s declaration of Saturday’s election as inconclusive  was “  nothing but sheer bravado’’.

Mohammed said the threat was because the opposition party was afraid of losing the rerun.

The chairman, who said the PDP might also have contrived the court threat as a way of distracting the APC and its members ahead of the rerun, called the  strategy “dead on arrival”.

”The PDP knows that the so-called court challenge which it has threatened to mount will not fly, especially because the highest court in the land has already pronounced on the issue of whether or not INEC has the powers to declare an election inconclusive.

”The PDP is not unaware of the pronouncement of the Supreme Court in the case of James Abiodun Faleke Vs INEC and others.

“The apex court held that INEC has the duty of conducting elections and that, besides the constitutional provisions, it is guided by the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) and the Election Guidelines and Manual issued for its officials in accordance with the Act,” he said.

Mohammed said that since the PDP had boasted that its candidate would win if  the Osun Governorship Election was conducted over and over again, the party “ should stop being jittery and put its money where its mouth is by willingly participating in the rerun.’’

He, however, said that if the PDP chose to boycott tomorrow’s rerun out of fear, the party’s right to do so would be respected.

”The PDP, after its failed mission to win Saturday’s election at all cost, is shopping for an illegal shortcut to victory by threatening a court action over an issue that has been settled.

“It’s a sheer waste of time. Let the PDP drop its pretension and get ready to be defeated in Thursday’s rerun.

“Alternatively, it can withdraw to save face,” the chairman said.

The APC also accused the PDP of cloning Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) with the intention of using them to rig the rerun election.

The statement said: “The APC has received fresh reports from our field agents on the ongoing cloning of PVCs by PDP agents. We view this development as bizarre and a sign of the desperation of the PDP to takeover Osun State by all illegal means.

“While we call on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to urgently investigate the development and promptly arrest persons behind the cloning, we strongly advise INEC to ensure that its voters’ register is not tampered with.

“Also, we call on INEC and security agencies to speak publicly on measures being taken to stop the ongoing vote buying by PDP agents, which has become widespread in the state.

The APC called for calm in the face of the already tense situation caused by the alleged PDP’s rigging plot.

“The Osun electorate must remain alert and resist any plot to subvert the people’s will and manipulate the rerun election.

“Commendably, the police already have in its custody a PDP stalwart who led other PDP leaders to buy up voters’ cards ahead of Thursday’s governorship rerun. There, however, remains much to be done to ensure the credibility of the forthcoming rerun election.”

Spokesman of the party in Osun State Kunle Oyatomi, said tomorrow’s supplementary poll “cannot be bought”.

In a statement, he said: “Sen Ademola Adeleke  can’t win on the popular votes. First, he is the least educated and qualified candidate Osun has ever raised in its history of political contest.

“The fraud that brought him to this lever (manipulation of card readers and purchase of the PVC of ill-informed voters) that we are now discussing him as a potential governor, marks us as essentially an illiterate and backward democracy.

“Such a person should not have qualified to be taken as ‘O’YES Cadet.

‘The PDP and Adeleke family would be disappointed on Thursday.

‘That vote can’t be bought, and would not be bought.

‘The PDP insists on going to court and contesting the rerun election at the same time. That is evidence of desperation.  If they have confidence they could win, they have no business to be in court at this stage.

‘The people of Osun will decide on Thursday (tomorrow) in closely monitored and protected votes where the likes of moneybags and fraudsters will be neutralised’

The PDP, however, demanded the immediate resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

The opposition party also called for  the immediate resignation of INEC Director of Operations Mrs. Amina Zakari who is also in charge of commission’s Information Communication Technology (ICT) Department.

At a media briefing in Abuja yesterday, the PDP, through its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan called out the INEC chair over his “controlling role in the fraudulent manipulations” in the September 22 governorship election in Osun State.

The opposition party accused Mrs. Zakari of altering election figures in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

INEC had declared the election inconclusive, following the cancellation of the election in some local government areas. The commission has slated a supplementary election in the affected areas for tomorrow.

Rejecting the inconclusive verdict on the election, the PDP insisted that the polls were concluded, adding that the party and indeed well-meaning Nigerians no longer have confidence in the INEC chairman.

The party said, “With INEC’s fraudulent conduct in the Osun governorship election, and approval that a concluded election be declared inconclusive, it is completely inexcusable that Prof. Yakubu presides over an atrocious and compromised electoral umpire that manipulates electoral processes, doctors figures, allocates fictitious votes and subverts the will of the people in an election.

“The PDP has additional documentary evidence of how this compromised INEC, through its Operations and ICT Department, doctored results from polling centres, directly shortchanged the PDP with no fewer than 4,387 votes by slashing votes cast for the PDP at the polling centres while allocating fictitious figures to the APC.

“The PDP has facts on how INEC slashed over 1000 votes freely cast by the people for our candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke, in Ayedaade Local Government Area, just to reduce our votes from our legitimate 10,836 votes cast at the polling centres to 9,836 votes so as to give APC the lead with a 1000 vote margin in the local government.

“Also, the PDP has evidence of how INEC, while collating results, directly allocated over 1,367 fictitious votes to the APC in Olorunda Local Government Area, to fraudulently shore up the APC votes to duplicitous 16,254 votes. This is in addition to evidence of how INEC awarded over 2,000 fictitious votes in favour of the APC in Osogbo to push APC’s vote to 23,379 against the actual 21,479 votes scored by the defeated party.

“Such writing of results by INEC in collusion with the APC occurred in many other areas leading to INEC’s ill-fated directives to its junior officials, including the one apprehended in Ayedaade, to destroy results already displayed at polling and collation centers.

“It was after INEC and the APC realised that despite their manipulation of figures, our candidate still scored the highest number of votes, making him the clear winner of the election, that they decided to fraudulently apply unconstitutional grounds to declare the election inconclusive.

“From the facts available to us, INEC robbed our party of over 4,387 votes. Our actual winning margin stands at 4,740 votes against the 353 votes declared by INEC.

“Furthermore, while the PDP, in rejecting INEC’s declaration, is resolute in the decision to seek legal redress and take our mandate, freely given to our candidate by the people of Osun State, our party has also discovered schemes perfected by INEC to rig its planned supplementary election in favour of the APC.”

“The PDP is already aware that INEC has increased the original number of voters in the affected polling centers by over 850 so as to expand its latitude to manipulate results with uncollected Permanent Voter Card (PVCs), a development, which further shows INEC’s determination to rig the election for APC.

“The PDP holds that the shenanigan that has characterised the Osun governorship election is a testing measure by the APC in collusion with INEC to rig the 2019 general elections, particularly the Presidential election, which they plan to plunge into similar controversy immediately it becomes obvious that APC is losing”.

The PDP expressed fears that the alleged complicit role of the electoral body could push the nation into an irretrievable state of anarchy and spell doom for the country’s democracy.

“While Prof. Mahmood Yakubu can no longer be trusted to conduct the 2019 general elections, it is public knowledge that Mrs. Amina Zakari, the INEC Director in charge of Operations and ICT is a direct blood relation of Mr. President and as such, we believe that she cannot be an impartial arbiter in an election involving her uncle.”

“The PDP therefore calls on all patriotic Nigerians to join in the demand for the resignation of Prof. Yakubu and Mrs. Zakari so as to avert this dangerous path, where INEC is leading our nation.

“As a law abiding and people-oriented political party, all that the PDP is demanding for is the return of our candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke, as the duly returned candidate at the September 22, 2018 Osun Governorship Election.

“We call on INEC to guarantee free, fair and credible election at all levels of engagement, as we will not allow unpatriotic individuals to destroy our nation with their inordinate and selfish aspirations”.

Danger Signs For Ambode, Shehu Sani, Others As APC Releases Full List Of Approved Mode Of Primaries For States

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has released a full list of approved mode of primaries for its various state chapters.

From the published list, some clear danger signs appear as the party may have succumbed to pressure from some governors and other power brokers to approve their preferred primary mode that would effectively ward off challenge against their interests.

In a state like Kaduna where Governor Nasir El-Rufai is seeking to prevent the return to senate of Shehu Sani, with whom he has been engaged in a bitter tussle, his preferred choice of indirect primary was approved.  Sani had pushed for direct primary to stand a fighting chance against El-Rufai’s Chief of Staff, Uba Sani.

In Adamawa, Governor Bindow Jibrilla, in a bid to frustrate threats to his reelection emanating from major challengers like EFCC chairman, Nuhu Ribadu, had requested indirect primaries with the backing of the state party leadership. His request was approved.

In Lagos where APC national leader, Bola Tinubu is reportedly trying to scuttle the reelection bid of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, his preferred choice of direct primary was approved, preparing the grounds for Jide Sanwo-Olu, already endorsed by Tinubu’s Mandate Group, to emerge.

Full statement by the APC headquarters listing approved mode of primaries for state chapters below:

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved the mode of primaries for Saturday, September 29th, 2018 governorship primary elections scheduled to hold across the thirty-six states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
